AYSO GIRLS' PROGRAM... The girls in West Torrance got tired of watching their brothers and their friends participate in soccer games Saturday after Saturday. The boys were having a great deal of fun and the girls wanted to be part of it. The girls began to put pressure on the AYSO administration and their own parents to develop a soccer program for them.

1971 saw the beginning of a very successful girls AYSO program in Region 14 under the leadership of new Girls Commissioner Don Hazzard with support from Dick Smisek, Regional Commissioner. The first season began with a total of 16 teams and 206 players from all over the South Bay. The parents really supported the effort by serving as coaches  team mothers/dads and referees.

Division I had four teams the first year for a total of 47 girls with two lady coaches and two men coaches. First year coaches were Inga Bonchonsky, Ricardo Ruiz, Gary Schumacher and Bronwen Zadrozna.

Division II had six teams with a total of 72 girls and six lady coaches. First year coaches were Shirley Cuddy, Chris Hueth, Carol Lindenman, Elke Rittner, Sue Cully, and Teri Whalen.

Division III had six teams with a total of 87 girls and three lady coaches and three men coaches. First year coaches were Dick Geluk, Tom Janssens, Helen Markley, Bernita Myers, Larry Sebben, and Christel Stierle

As part of ther new girls program came the need for more referees, and as a result AYSO saw the first lady referees. The first West Torrance AYSO lady refefees were Alma Hazzard, Marina La Van Way, Marion Maxim and Dorothy  McKee.

The girls program got a big help in getting started from Ann Smisek who made all of the 206 girls shorts. What a job!

In 1972 other regions of the South Bay began their own girls programs and "the rest is history."

Later, when the girls AYSO PROGRAM  was undwerway several girls began to putb pressure on West Torrance Highh School and the other high schools in the area to begin a soccer program for girls. When that program was started many girls from AYSO played for their schools.

After playing for West High School, Kathy Hazzard earned her coaching certificate and became assistant coach of the West High Girls Varsity Soccer Team while attending college. Sue Friesler went on to be the Girls Junior Varsity Assistant Coach at West High School.

Don Hazzard learned one unexpected lesson during his first year a Girls Commissioner. He once cancelled games because of rain and nearly drowned in a sea of tears and complaints from many players. From then on it was play on, rain or shine, unless there was thunder and lightning.

AYSO Regiom 14 Girls Soccer program continues its very successful activities to this day.
