George Duckworth

Birthday  1-28-1923,  Bolton, Lancashire, England.

George Duckworth grew up playing soccer in grammar school in the cold, wet north of England. He played in the British army during WWII. He was very involved with AYSO. He coached one of the original Division III first 4 teams in 1967 alongside Joe Bonchonsky,Reggie Brooks, the Scottish Flynn Brothers, and so many others. The first field was Jefferson School on Carson St. in West Torrance. The old goal posts were made of wood. The problem with them was the crossbar would start to sag so George thought he needed to fix these. He worked for Garrett Airesearch, now Honeywell. Many coaches were from the aerospace companies around the South Bay. He helped to install the goal posts at the Riviera School. They stayed up many years to come. His team was the Condors. George Duckworth coached many players who went on to become brilliant soccer players, like Todd Saldana. He always had the interest of the kids at heart. Winning was great but he was more concerned the players all enjoyed themselves and learned to play the game. He never left out any kids on the sidelines.
